Its New Steel Works Now Open, an Open-Die Forger Sets a Casting Record
02/23/2017 - South Korea’s TAEWOONG Co. Ltd. has set a new steelmaking record, becoming the first to successfully produce 1,000 mm blooms on a curved continuous caster, according to an announcement.
Using a new three-strand caster built by SMS Concast, blooms of 410 mm, 600 mm and 800 mm in diameter already had been successfully cast in October and November 2016. But the record-setting cast of the first 1,000 mm bloom occurred in January.
TAEWOONG specializes in making open-die and ring forgings, and the caster can simultaneously produce different sizes in a variety of grades, including carbon and tool steels, stainless and special alloys. The caster is one component of the company’s new US$430 million, EAF-based steel works, which formally opened in November 2016.
“This steelmaking plant project is one of our company’s long-cherished ambitions for 20 years,” said TAEWOONG founder and chairman Huh Yong-do in a statement. “We are proud to be the first in the world able to cast 1,000 mm round blooms on a bent continuous casting machine.”
The caster has a machine radius of 18 meters and is capable of producing approximately 800,000 tons annually.
