Italian Companies Team Up to Offer Green Mill Solutions
02/18/2021 - Danieli and two other companies have agreed to collaborate on projects aimed at converting primary steelmaking plants in southern Italy and abroad to direct reduction–electric arc furnace (DR-EAF) facilities.
In an announcement Thursday, Danieli said it has signed a framework agreement with Italian multinational oilfield services company Saipem and Leonardo, a multinational aerospace and defense contractor.
Together, they’ll focus on providing mills and mill solutions related to the DR-EAF process route, Danieli said. The focus, Danieli said, will be on offering EAF solutions powered by renewably generated electricity and iron reduction plants that consume natural gas and hydrogen.
Danieli will contribute its direct reduction and electric furnace technology and incorporate the proprietary Energiron direct reduction technology jointly developed by it and Tenova.
Saipem will take charge of plant construction, integrating technologies and know-how required for natural gas and hydrogen supply as well as for carbon capture. Leonardo, through its cybersecurity division, will take on the role of digital and security technological partner for Industry 4.0 integrated solutions.
"The three companies propose ... to create an innovative and sustainable model that is consistent with current environmental regulations and current national and EU CO2 emissions-reduction objectives also in line with the CO2 reduction targets established in the Paris Agreement," Danieli said.
