Industry Group Says India Has Inched Out Japan as World's Second-Biggest Producer

Citing the Steel Users Federation of India, an industry association, PTI said the claim to the No. 2 spot is based on recent World Steel Association production data.

The data show that in December, January and February, Indian production for the first time exceeded Japan’s production in each of those three months. Over that period, India out-produced Japan by 215,000 metric tons, according to the data.

Some industry observers had predicted that India would overtake Japan this year.

"The government has taken a host of steps to curb imports, push local demand with initiatives like 'Make in India' … and infrastructure projects to encourage the domestic market," the Steel Users Federation said.
