Indonesian Steelmaker to Fire Up New Strip Mill in 2019
08/18/2016 - Indonesia’s PT Krakatau Steel has ordered a new hot strip mill for its integrated steel works on the island of Java.
According to SMS group, which was awarded the contract for the project, the mill is being designed with an initial annual capacity of 1.5 million metric tons, but can be later increased to 4 million metric tons. It will be able to make strips in widths of up to 1,650 mm, SMS said.
The order includes a reheat furnace, a 4-high reversing roughing stand with edger, a 6-stand finishing mill, a laminar strip cooling section, a universal coiler and the coil transfer system. SMS also will outfit the slab and coil yards, provide the electrical and automation packages and supply ancillary components, including a roll shop, water management facilities and cranes.
Commissioning has been scheduled for early 2019.
“The new hot rolling mill will be one of the most modern facilities of this type worldwide, enabling (PT Krakatau Steel) to fulfill highest demands regarding quality, productivity and production cost. As such, it will be the backbone for their further expansion and success in a fast-growing market,” SMS said in a statement.
