India Now Is World's Second-Biggest Producer of Stainless Steel
05/22/2017 - Global stainless steel production rose 10.2% in 2016 to a record 45.8 million metric tons, according to data released by the International Stainless Steel Forum.
According to the organization’s annual statistical handbook, “Stainless Steel in Figures,” mill production exceeded 2015 production by 4.2 million metric tons.
China remained the world’s leading producer, accounting for 54% of output. India, meanwhile, overtook Japan to become the second-leading producer, making 3.3 million metric tons. Japan produced 3.06 million metric tons.
“This is a great moment for the Indian stainless steel industry,” K.K. Pahuja, president of the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association, told The (India) Economic Times. “ISSDA urges continuous policy support from the government to take the Indian stainless steel industry to newer heights.”
The U.S. ranked fourth in production at 2.48 million metric tons.
