In Indiana, Steelworkers Rally Over U. S. Steel Layoffs, and ArcelorMittal Advances Optimization Plan
08/26/2016 - The United Steelworkers union is rallying this afternoon in downtown Gary, Ind., protesting U. S. Steel Corp.’s decision to layoff approximately three dozen maintenance workers at the Gary Works, reports The Times newspaper of northwest Indiana.
According The Times, the union says the layoffs violated its collective bargaining agreement with U. S. Steel. And, the union says, more layoffs have followed, with an additonal 25 employees having been let go and as many as 40 transferred into low-wage labor gang.

Elsewhere in Indiana, ArcelorMittal is moving ahead with its “footprint optimization” at its Indiana Harbor facility, The Times reports.
"In a small, simple term, this is about idling less competitive finishing assets while making important investments in more efficient asset to improve the configuration of the Indiana Harbor plant," ArcelorMittal chairman and chief executive Lakshmi Mittal said duirng a conference all with analysts last week, The Times reported.
ArcelorMittal expects to save US$200 million annually by closing the facility’s 84-inch hot strip mill and other finishing lines, The Times said.
