Ilva to Temporarily Lay Off Up To 2,000 Workers

Taranto-based Italian steel producer Ilva announced in a press release that "due to the ongoing market crisis which started in the first quarter this year, in the next few days the company will start to implement temporary layoffs at the Taranto-based steel complex." Up to 2,000 workers will be affected by the decision and will be paid from redundancy funds.

Implementation of the measure will take place over a period of 13 weeks starting from 19 November. According to the statement, the figure of 2,000 represents the maximum impact of the temporary measure, and will only affect downstream operations. In particular, the temporary layoffs will affect workers in the longitudinal welding mills Nos. 1 and 2, in the coating shop, in the hot rolling mill No. 1, in the plate mill, in part of the cold rolling mill and also in the maintenance and repair division of the company.
