IISI Reports World Steel Production for October 2007

Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 114.0 million tonnes in October — 6.6% higher than for the same month of 2006, and 2.7% higher than the previous month (September 2007). Excluding China, world production grew by 2.5% compared to October 2006, and by 4.0% compared to the previous month (September 2007).
 
Weighing in at 56.1% of total world production for October 2007, production in Asia stood at 64.0 million tonnes in October, 10.5% higher than in October 2006. Representing 37.7% of world production for October, Chinese production was reported at 42.9 million tonnes in October, a 13.5% increase compared to October 2006, and a 0.5% increase compared to the previous month.

The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 17.6 million tonnes of crude steel in October, 2.2% less than in October 2006. Comparing October 2007 to October 2006, crude steel production increased 101.6% in the Netherlands and by 31.1% in Greece, but fell by 29.1% in Slovenia, by 24.2% in Finland, and by 21.4% in Hungary. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 15.5% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.6 million tonnes in October, an increase of 2.1% compared to October 2006. Bosnia-Herzegovina showed the largest increase (17.0%), with significant decreases recorded in Serbia and Montenegro (-40.2%) and Switzerland (-23.2%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.2% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.5 million tonnes in October, reflecting a 5.9% increase compared to October 2006. Byelorussia had the largest (+211.9%) increase for the region, while Moldova decreased 27.1% and Uzbekistan decreased 17.9% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.2% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
North American production totaled 11.5 million tonnes in October, a 5.3% increase compared to October 2006. Comparing October 2007 to October 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Trinidad and Tobago (+29.2%) and El Salvador (+14.8%), while production in Mexico grew by 3.7% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 10.1% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
 
South American production for October 2007 totaled 4.1 million tonnes, a 3.2% increase compared to October 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Peru (+28.4%), while Paraguay (-36.8%) logged the greatest percentage decrease. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.6% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.5 million tonnes in October 2007, a 5.9% decrease compared to October 2006. Comparing October 2007 to October 2006, the most significant percentage increase took effect in Algeria, while production in South Africa fell by 10.3% over the same period. The African countries contributed 1.4% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.4 million tonnes in October 2007, a 14.2% increase compared to October 2006. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.7 million tonnes in August, a 3.4% decrease compared to October 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in October 2007.
