IISI Reports World Steel Production for November 2007

Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 109.0 million tonnes in November — 4.0% higher than for the same month of 2006, but 4.6% lower than the previous month (October 2007). Excluding China, world production grew by 3.8% compared to November 2006, but fell by 2.8% compared to the previous month (October 2007).
 
Weighing in at 55.2% of total world production for November 2007, production in Asia stood at 60.2 million tonnes in November, 3.6% higher than in November 2006. Representing 36.4% of world production for November, Chinese production was reported at 39.7 million tonnes in November, a modest 4.3% increase compared to November 2006, and a 7.5% decrease compared to the previous month.

The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 17.4 million tonnes of crude steel in November, 2.6% more than in November 2006. Comparing November 2007 to November 2006, crude steel production increased 97.8% in the Netherlands and by 20.0% in the United Kingdom, but fell by 20.0% in both Finland and Hungary. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 15.9% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.5 million tonnes in November, an increase of 4.7% compared to November 2006. Turkeyshowed the largest increase (10.3%), with significant decreases recorded in Serbia and Montenegro (-40.3%), Croatia (19.9%), and Switzerland (-19.6%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.3% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.1 million tonnes in November, reflecting a slight 0.1% increase compared to November 2006. Kazakhstan (+12.7%) and Byelorussia (+5.5%) had the largest increases for the region, while Uzbekistan decreased 15.4% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.3% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
North American production totaled 11.0 million tonnes in November, an 8.2% increase compared to November 2006. Comparing November 2007 to November 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Trinidad and Tobago (+42.9%) and Guatemala (+31.6%). U.S. production grew by 8.5% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 10.1% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
South American production for November 2007 totaled 4.1 million tonnes, an 8.9% increase compared to November 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Argentina (+19.8%) and Venezuela (+19.4%), while Ecuador (-17.8%) and Paraguay (-36.8%) logged the greatest percentage decreases. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.8% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.6 million tonnes in November 2007, a 4.0% increase compared to November 2006. Comparing November 2007 to November 2006, the most significant percentage increase took effect in Egypt(+10.3%), while production in Morocco fell by 19.1% over the same period. The African countries contributed 1.5% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.4 million tonnes in November 2007, a 21.3% increase compared to November 2006. Comparing November 2007 to November 2006, the most significant increases took effect in Saudi Arabia (+84.0%) and Qatar (+10.8%). Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.3% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.75 million tonnes in August, a 3.2% increase compared to November 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in November 2007.
