IISI Reports World Crude Steel Productions for May 2007
06/26/2007 - World crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute stood at an estimated 112.2 million tonnes in May — 6.4% higher than for the same month of 2006. Excluding China, world production grew by just 1.7% compared to May 2006.
Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 112.2 million tonnes in May — 6.4% higher than for the same month of 2006, but just 2.7% higher than the previous month (April 2007). Excluding China, world production grew by 2.8% compared to the previous month (April 2007), and by just 1.7% compared to May 2006.

Weighing in at 54.7% of total world production for May 2007, production in Asia stood at 61.4 million tonnes in May, 11.3% higher than in May 2006. Representing 36.8% of world production for May, Chinese production was 41.3 million tonnes in May, a 15.7% increase compared to May 2006.
The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 18.4 million tonnes of crude steel in May, 0.5% less than in May 2006. Comparing May 2007 to May 2006, crude steel production increased 13.4% in Luxembourg, but decreased 12.1% in Finland. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 16.4% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.8 million tonnes in May, an increase of 20.5% compared to May 2006. Serbia and Montenegro showed the largest increase (+102.3%) over the period followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina (+25.9%) and Croatia (24.9%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.5% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.8 million tonnes in May, with a 3.1% increase compared to May 2006. Moldova had the largest (+112.5%) increase for the region, while Uzbekistan decreased 11.3% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.6% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
North American production totaled 11.1 million tonnes in May, a 5.7% decrease compared to May 2006. Comparing May 2007 to May 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Cuba (+35.1), while production in the U.S. (contributing 7.4% of total world steel production for May) decreased 6.2%, and production in Canada decreased 22.5% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 9.9% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
South American production for May 2007 totaled 4.2 million tonnes, an 11.2% increase compared to May 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Brazil (+16.2%), while Paraguay (–53.5%) logged the greatest decrease. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.7% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
Production in Africa totaled 1.6 million tonnes in May 2007, a 0.3% increase compared to May 2006. Comparing May 2007 to May 2006, the most significant percentage increases took effect in Morocco (+91.3%), while Libya logged a decrease (–10.4%). Although these changes are significant for each country, their impact on world production is small, as the African countries contributed only 1.4% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.2 million tonnes in May 2007, a 4.3% decrease compared to May 2006. Comparing May to May, a gain was reported by Saudi Arabia (+14.8%), and a loss (–12.3%) was reported by Iran. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.1% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
Production in Oceania totaled 0.8 million tonnes in May, an 8.6% decrease compared to May 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in May 2007.
