IISI Reports World Crude Steel Productions for June 2007

Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 110.6 million tonnes in June — 5.7% higher than for the same month of 2006, but a drop of 1.2% from the previous month (June 2007). Excluding China, world production fell by 2.1% compared to the previous month (May 2007), and grew by just 1.7% compared to June 2006.

Weighing in at 55.4% of total world production for June 2007, production in Asia stood at 61.3 million tonnes in June, 9.9% higher than in June 2006. Representing 39.5% of world production for June, Chinese production was estimated at 41.5 million tonnes in June, a healthy 13.3% increase compared to June 2006.
 
The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 17.9 million tonnes of crude steel in June, 0.2% less than in June 2006. Comparing June 2007 to June 2006, crude steel production increased 49.3% in Romania and 19.7% in Greece, but fell by 25.6% in Belgium, by 14.8% in the Netherlands, and by 14.1% in Slovenia. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 16.2% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.5 million tonnes in June, an increase of 3.7% compared to June 2006. Bosnia-Herzegovina showed the largest increase (+20.6%) over the period while Macedonia showed the largest decrease (-13.9%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.3% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.4 million tonnes in June, with a 3.7% increase compared to June 2006. Moldova had the largest (+88.9%) increase for the region, while Uzbekistan decreased 9.7% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.4% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
North American production totaled 11.2 million tonnes in June, a 2.3% decrease compared to June 2006. Comparing June 2007 to June 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Guatemala (+37.6), while production in the U.S. (contributing 7.5% of total world steel production for June) decreased 3.3%, and production in Canada decreased 0.8% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 10.1% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
South American production for June 2007 totaled 3.9 million tonnes, an 8.5% increase compared to June 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Uruguay (+72.4%), while Peru (-46.2%) and Paraguay (–53.5%) logged the greatest percentage decreases. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.5% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.5 million tonnes in June 2007, a 2.2% decrease compared to June 2006. Comparing June 2007 to June 2006, the most significant percentage increases took effect in Morocco (+92.2%). The African countries contributed 1.4% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.3 million tonnes in June 2007, a 6.9% increase compared to June 2006. Comparing June to June, the largest percentage gain was reported by Saudi Arabia (+16.2%). Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.8 million tonnes in June, a 3.1% decrease compared to June 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in June 2007.
