IISI Reports World Crude Steel Production for July 2007

Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 109.9 million tonnes in July — 5.3% higher than for the same month of 2006, but a drop of 1.1% from the previous month (July 2007). Excluding China, world production fell by 0.5% compared to the previous month (June 2007), and grew by just 0.5% compared to July 2006.

Weighing in at 55.5% of total world production for July 2007, production in Asia stood at 61.0 million tonnes in July, 9.4% higher than in July 2006. Representing 37.5% of world production for July, Chinese production was reported at 41.3 million tonnes in July, a 14.5% increase compared to July 2006, but a 2.1% decrease compared to the previous month.
 
The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 17.0 million tonnes of crude steel in July, 1.8% less than in July 2006. Comparing July 2007 to July 2006, crude steel production increased 27.7% in Hungary and 16.1% in Greece, but fell by 21.7% in Belgium, by 16.8% in Finland, and by 10.2% in France. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 15.4% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.6 million tonnes in July, an increase of 9.9% compared to July 2006. Norway showed the largest increase followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina (+34.3%) and Macedonia (17.5%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.4% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.6 million tonnes in July, reflecting a 3.6% increase compared to July 2006. Moldova had the largest (+54.5%) increase for the region, followed by Byelorussia (+19.3%) while Uzbekistan decreased 7.7% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.6% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
North American production totaled 11.3 million tonnes in July, a 0.7% increase compared to July 2006. Comparing July 2007 to July 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Guatemala (+26.0%), while production in the U.S. (contributing 7.6% of total world steel production for July) decreased 0.7%, and production in Canada increased 5.3% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 10.2% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
South American production for July 2007 totaled 4.0 million tonnes, a 0.7% decrease compared to July 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Uruguay (+17.6%), while Argentina (-26.0%) logged the greatest percentage decrease. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.6% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.6 million tonnes in July 2007, a 0.1% increase compared to July 2006. Comparing July 2007 to July 2006, the most significant percentage increases took effect in Libya and Morocco. The African countries contributed 1.4% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.2 million tonnes in July 2007, a 0.3% decrease compared to July 2006. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.1% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.7 million tonnes in July, a 1.4% decrease compared to July 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in July 2007.
