IISI Reports World Crude Steel Production for August 2007

Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 108.1 million tonnes in August — 5.3% higher than for the same month of 2006, but a drop of 1.5% from the previous month (July 2007). Excluding China, world production fell by 2.9% compared to the previous month (July 2007), and grew by just 0.7% compared to August 2006.
 
Weighing in at 56.0% of total world production for August 2007, production in Asia stood at 61.3 million tonnes in August, 9.5% higher than in August 2006. Representing 38.5% of world production for August, Chinese production was reported at 41.6 million tonnes in August, a 13.6% increase compared to August 2006, and a 0.8% increase compared to the previous month.

The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 15.2 million tonnes of crude steel in August, 2.2% less than in August 2006. Comparing August 2007 to August 2006, crude steel production increased 34.7% in Hungary, 22.3% in Sweden, and 18.4% in Slovenia, but fell by 25.8% in Finland, by 17.5% in Spain, and by 11.0% in Italy. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 14.1% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.4 million tonnes in August, an increase of 0.6% compared to August 2006. Croatiashowed the largest increase (13.3%), with significant decreases recorded in Bosnia-Herzegovina (-32.8%) and Norway (-75.0%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.2% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 10.2 million tonnes in August, reflecting a 0.1% decrease compared to August 2006. Moldova had the largest (+40.0%) increase for the region, followed by Kazakhstan (+14.1%) while Uzbekistan decreased 14.3% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.4% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
North American production totaled 11.4 million tonnes in August, a 3.6% increase compared to August 2006. Comparing August 2007 to August 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Canada (+30.0%), while production in the U.S. grew by just 0.5%, and production in Cuba fell by 47.1% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 10.6% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
South American production for August 2007 totaled 4.0 million tonnes, a 0.5% decrease compared to August 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Paraguay (+17.6%), while Argentina (-23.5%) logged the greatest percentage decrease. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.7% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.5 million tonnes in August 2007, a 1.9% decrease compared to August 2006. Comparing August 2007 to August 2006, the most significant percentage increases took effect in Libya and Morocco. The African countries contributed 1.4% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.3 million tonnes in August 2007, a 7.3% increase compared to August 2006. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.7 million tonnes in August, a 7.5% increase compared to August 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in August 2007.
