IISI Reports World Crude Steel Production for April 2007

Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting stood at an estimated 109.3 million tonnes in April — 7.6% higher than for the same month of 2006, but 2.1% lower than the previous month (March 2007). Excluding China, world production fell by 3.5% compared to the previous month (March 2007), but rose only 3.0% compared to April 2006.

Weighing in at 54.7% of total world production for April 2007, production in Asia stood at 59.8 million tonnes in April, 12.7% higher than in April 2006. Representing 36.9% of world production for April, Chinese production was 40.3 million tonnes in April, a 16.5% increase compared to April 2006.
 
The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 18.5 million tonnes of crude steel in April, 3.5% more than in April 2006. Comparing April 2007 to April 2006, crude steel production increased 36.0% in Slovenia, and 34.8% in Greece, but decreased 6.4% in Finland and 4.3% in the Czech Republic. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 16.9% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.6 million tonnes in April, an increase of 12.8% compared to April 2006. Bosnia-Herzegovina showed the largest increase (+35.3%) over the period followed by Macedonia (+20.8%). Altogether, these countries contributed 2.4% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 9.6 million tonnes in April, with an 4.8% increase compared to April 2006. Byelorussia had the largest (+16.8%) increase for the region, while Uzbekistan decreased 13.1% over the period. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.6% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
North American production totaled 10.5 million tonnes in April, a 6.2% decrease compared to April 2006. Comparing April 2007 to April 2006, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Guatemala (+92.3%) and Cuba (+33.3), while production in the U.S. (contributing 7.3% of total world steel production for April) decreased 6.6%, and production in Canada decreased 24.8% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 9.6% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
South American production for April 2007 totaled 4.0 million tonnes, a 9.2% increase compared to April 2006. The most significant percentage increases took effect in Uruguay (estimate) and Ecuador (+47.1%), while Chile (–5.0%) logged the greatest decrease. Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.6% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
Production in Africa totaled 1.5 million tonnes in April 2007, a 0.3% decrease compared to April 2006. Comparing April 2007 to April 2006, the most significant percentage increases took effect in Morocco (+107.0%) and Zimbabwe (+50.0%), while Algeria logged a decrease (–20.2%). Although these changes are significant for each country, their impact on world production is small, as the African countries contributed only 1.4% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.3 million tonnes in April 2007, a 1.1% decrease compared to April 2006. Comparing April to April, a gain was reported by Qatar (+3.0%), and a loss (–2.6%) was reported by Iran. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.2% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
 
Production in Oceania totaled 0.7 million tonnes in April, a 0.2% decrease compared to April 2006. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in April 2007.
