May 23, 2006 — Figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that world crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting stood at an estimated 99.0 million tonnes in April — 6.1% higher than the 93.3 million tonnes produced in April 2005.

Weighing in at 53% of total world production for April 2006, production in Asia stood at 52.3 million tonnes in April, 12.9% higher than in April 2005. Representing 34.1% of world production for April, Chinese production was 33.7 million tonnes in April, an increase of 19.0% compared to April 2005.
The twenty-five countries of the European Union (EU(25)) produced 16.6 million tonnes of crude steel in April, 0.8% more than in April 2005. Comparing April 2006 to April 2005, crude steel production increased 63.5% in Luxembourg and 41.9% in Greece, but decreased 26.1% in Slovenia and 25.4% in Spain. Altogether, the countries in the EU25 contributed 16.8% % of the total reported world production in April 2006.
Production in Other Europe totaled 2.8 million tonnes in April, an increase of 9.9% compared to April 2005. Serbia and Montenegro showed the largest increase (+54.1%) over the period, while Norway exhibited the largest (–7.7%) decrease. Altogether, these countries contributed 2.8% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
Production in the countries of the CIS totaled 9.5 million tonnes in April, with a 1.9% decrease compared to April 2005. Byelorussia had the largest (+4.0%) increase for the region, while Kazakhstan exhibited the largest (–23.4%) decrease. Altogether, these countries contributed 9.6% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
North American production totaled 10.8 million tonnes in April, a 0.8% decrease compared to April 2005. Production fell in Canada (–5.7%), which contributed 1.3% of total world steel production for April. Production in the U.S. (contributing 8.1% of total world steel production for April) increased 1.2% over the same period. Altogether, the North American countries contributed 11.0% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
South American production for April 2006 totaled 3.6 million tonnes, a 9.5% decrease compared to April 2005. The most significant decreases took effect in Ecuador (–33.3%) and Chile (–32.3%), while the largest increase was recorded in Uruguay (+150.0%). Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.6% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
Production in Africa totaled 1.4 million tonnes in April 2006, a 5.5% decrease compared to April 2005. Production in Zimbabwe was down 81.8% compared to April 2005, while production in Algeria grew 12.0% over the same period. Altogether, the African countries contributed 1.4% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
Production in the Middle East totaled 1.3 million tonnes in April 2006, an 8.1% increase compared to April 2005. Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.3% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
Production in Oceania totaled 0.7 million tonnes in April, a decrease of 8.0% compared to April 2005. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.7% of the total reported world production in April 2006.
Total world production for April was 1.6% lower than production for the previous month, March 2006.
