March 30, 2004 — Members of the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) have continued to dominate the Metal Bulletin list of top steelmakers in 2003. Nine of the top ten steel producers are members of IISI.
Arcelor, based in Luxembourg, continues to lead the list with production of 42.8 million tonnes of steel in 2003, according to Metal Bulletin. Arcelor also occupied the top spot in 2002. Arcelor was formed in 2002 through the merger of Arbed, Aceralia, and Usinor.
Nippon Steel remains in second place on the list with production of 31.8 million tonnes in 2003. Production at Nippon rose 2.9% compared to 2002.
The LNM Group continues to rise in the list, finishing 2003 in third position with production of 31.1 million tonnes. The total does not include production for Iscor, which is 49% owned by The LNM Group. LNM is likely to rise further this year with the completion of its acquisitions in Poland.
Other IISI members in the top ten include JFE Steel, Posco, Corus Group, U. S. Steel, ThyssenKrupp Steel, and the Riva Group. Positions 11 to 14 are occupied by IISI members Nucor, Sumitomo Metal Industries, SAIL, and the Gerdau Group.
The Metal Bulletin list includes all steelmakers that produced more than two million tonnes of steel in 2003. 110 companies made the list this year, seven more than in 2002.
