Hyundai Steel Mass Produces 1.8 GPa Hot Stamping Steel

A world’s first, according to Hyundai Steel, the new steel product was developed in cooperation with the Hyundai Kia Namyang R&D Center.
 
Business Korea reports the company is supplying the product for an electric vehicle version of Hyundai Motor Co.’s Genesis G80 and the new Genesis G90. The new steel product not only provides lighter weight for vehicles but also enhanced passenger safety due to its improved tensile strength.
 
In traditional hot stamping, steel sheets are heated to 900°C or higher, put into a mold and then rapidly cooled to be made into parts. The method employed by Hyundai Steel lowered the temperature of the furnace by more than 50°C.
