Hydnum Steel Granted €60 Million by Spanish Government From the PERTE of Industrial Decarbonization
04/24/2025 - Hydnum Steel announced the Spanish Government has granted €60 million in funding through the strategic project for the recovery and economic transformation (PERTE) of industrial decarbonization to aid in the construction of the first green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, located in Puertollano.
“It is conceived as a driving project committed to the new European industrial paradigm: sustainable, competitive and digital,” said Hydnum Steel in a statement.
Hydnum Steel said the plant will specialize in the production of hot-rolled flat steel to be used in sectors including automotive, construction and renewable energy. The plant will feature exclusive use of 100% renewable energy, sustainable water management, a comprehensive commitment to quality employment, circular economy principles, smart production systems and advanced industrial digitalization.
The company said the project has been declared a priority project by the government of Castilla-La Mancha and is in the process of obtaining the status of project of singular interest. This legal designation would speed up the plant’s development and implementation.
The World Economic Forum in Davos named it one of the five most relevant projects in the world for industrial decarbonization.
The company estimates the Puertollano plant will have a production capacity of up to 2.6 million metric tons per year once completed, with an initial production rate of 1.5 million metric tons.
It will generate more than 1,000 jobs and 3,500 indirect jobs and have already secured sales of 75% of their production for the first seven years of operation, the company said.
The plant is currently in the advanced stages of administrative processing and engineering validation with construction scheduled to begin at the end of 2025.
