Horsehead Breaks Ground on EAF Dust Recycling Facility

Zinc producer Horsehead Corp. has broken ground at a site in Barnwell County, S.C., where it will build a new zinc recycling facility.

Horsehead will use the new recycling facility to process zinc-bearing electric arc furnace dust, a waste stream of the minimill steel process route. The new facility is expected to have a fully-installed capacity of 180,000 tons per year.

The new facility is Horsehead's first Greenfield project. The first of its two units is slated to start up in mid-2009.

Horsehead is a wholly owned subsidiary of Horsehead Holding Corp., a leading U.S. producer of specialty zinc and zinc-based products. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., Horsehead employs over 1000 people and operates six facilities throughout the U.S.
