Hertwich Engineering to Provide Continuous Homogenizing and Sawing Plant for EMAL
12/29/2008 - Hertwich Engineering, a company of the SMS group, will supply and commission a continuous homogenizing and sawing plant for Emirates Aluminum of UAE.
Emirates Aluminum (EMAL), UAE, has placed an order with Hertwich Engineering, Austria, a company of the SMS group, Germany, for the supply and commissioning of a continuous homogenizing and sawing plant.
Hertwich Engineering’s scope of supply includes an ultrasonic inspection station, continuous homogenizer and cooler, and two billet saws with downstream packing plant, in addition to full automation and process integration. The plant will have a phase one design capacity of 165.000 tonnes/year.
EMAL, a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminum Co. Limited and Mubadala Development Co., was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world’s largest single-site aluminum smelter complex. The project will be built in two phases and utilize Emirati-developed technology.
At the end of phase 1 in 2010, EMAL will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminum per year, with production growing to an annual volume of 1.4 million tonnes at the end of phase 2. The aluminum complex, a 6-km2 site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah (halfway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai), will produce primary aluminum with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, billet, tee ingots and sheet ingot.
As the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification and help to create downstream opportunities. The development will employ more than 14,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and 2000 people in future production.
EMAL will adhere to the strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of-the-art emission control equipment including sulfur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest pot-room gas treatment technology, best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.
Commissioning of the continuous homogenizer and cooler, billet saws, downstream packing plant, and ultrasonic inspection station is scheduled for early 2010.
