Handan Orders Wire Rod Outlet from Siemens

Handan Iron & Steel Co. has ordered a wire rod outlet from Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for a rolling mill in its Handan Works.

The new equipment will enable Handan to produce rods from 5 to 22 mm in diameter, with the capability to expand to 25-mm rod, and rebar from 6 to 16 mm. Products will include standard high carbon and alloy steel, bearing steel, and spring steel.

Depending on the product mix, the mill will produce about 700,000 tonnes per year for both domestic and overseas markets. Mill output speed guarantees are 112 m/sec for 5.5-mm rod and 105 m/sec for 5.0-mm rod.

The scope of supply is for equipment from the second prefinishing mill through to the reform station, including a shear arrangement, No-Twist Mill, Reducing/Sizing Mill, pinch roll, laying head, and four proprietary Morgan control systems, as well as a level 1 automation system for the rod outlet. The contracts also cover engineering for the rod outlet equipment and site supervision for its installation and commissioning.

The new mill is expected to start operation by the end of 2010, with the Reducing/Sizing Mill start-up following two months later.
