GSCC Certified: Arkansas Steel Associates’ Science-Based Emissions Targets
04/23/2025 - The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) announced today the certification of Arkansas Steel Associates’ (ASA) corporate average steel emissions intensity (CASEI) base year emissions and science-based emissions target (SBET).
“Through independent verification and continuous progress, Arkansas Steel Associates is providing its customers, partners, and policymakers with the trust they need to advance their climate goals,” said Adina Renee Adler, executive director of GSCC.
According to a press release, ASA had a base year CASEI of 0.70 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel in 2023. It has committed to a target of 0.60 by 2030 and a long-term goal of 0.12 by 2050, aligned with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
“Achieving these targets will allow us to produce quality American-made steel while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions,” said Hiro Kado, president and chief executive officer of ASA.
The GSCC said its Steel Climate Standard ensures annual self-auditing and progress toward emissions reductions using the latest climate science. ASA’s certification helps customers make an informed decision and supports public policy initiatives that recognize and reward green steel production.
“We plan to further address decarbonization issues by developing innovative ways to reduce our overall carbon impact,” Kado said.
