Great Lakes Industry Group Will Pursue DOE Hydrogen Hub Grant
11/07/2022 - An industry-led consortium that includes Linde and Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is moving ahead with an application for federal funding to support development of a hydrogen hub in the Great Lakes region.
Called the Great Lakes Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the consortium will compete for the Department of Energy funding, which is intended to support at least four regional hydrogen “hubs” that will link hydrogen producers and consumers through a new hydrogen infrastructure. The hope is to accelerate the use of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier, according to the Department of Energy.
The Great Lakes consortium argues that the southern and western shores of Lake Erie are an ideal place for such a hub due to its access to nuclear power, Interstate 75 and Interstate 80 crossroads, a high concentration of manufacturing and technology companies, the Great Lakes marine shipping fleet and the presence of a highly skilled workforce.
“This industry-led hydrogen hub intends to ensure that the Midwest is a leader in decarbonization so that regional industries and supply chains are globally competitive, and opportunities are created for workers and their communities,” said Frank Calzonetti, vice president for research at The University of Toledo.
