GM Names ThyssenKrupp
Stahl
Supplier of the Year
April 19, 2004 — General Motors (GM) has again recognized ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG as Supplier of the Year for its outstanding performance in 2003.
The honor was awarded to a total of 77 GM suppliers worldwide. As a previous GM Supplier of the Year in 2000, 2001 and 2002, ThyssenKrupp Stahl has become the first steel producer to win the award four times in a row. ThyssenKrupp Stahl supplies GM’s European plants with hot-rolled strip and electrogalvanized sheet. Last year it delivered roughly 385,000 tonnes of steel to GM.
The General Motors Supplier of the Year Award honors outstanding performance in quality, technology and service. ThyssenKrupp Stahl earned the award under difficult conditions last year, including a fire in its high-performance cold rolling mill in Dortmund in November 2003.
Bo Andersson, General Motors Vice President Worldwide Purchasing, Production Control & Logistics, said at the award ceremony in Prague: “ThyssenKrupp Stahl is representative of the type of company we want to grow with as we drive to be the best worldwide. The company is a role model for all of our suppliers.” Dr. Ulrich Jaroni, Executive Board Member of ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG and responsible for the Auto Division, expressed his thanks saying: “We are proud of this recognition of our work and our products. ThyssenKrupp Stahl will continue to do all it can to be a first-class, dependable partner for General Motors.”
In addition to its four international awards, ThyssenKrupp Stahl has twice won the national supplier award of GM subsidiary Adam Opel AG. The awards are the result of an intensive customer/supplier relationship in which the partners have continually set new technological standards. For example, Opel supported ThyssenKrupp Stahl in development of the new lightweight steel auto body NSB® NewSteelBody. Among other products, ThyssenKrupp Stahl supplies multiphase “TRIP” steel—characterized by high strength and good formability—for body parts of the new Astra. Opel has pioneered the use of such advanced multiphase steels in the high-volume compact car segment.
In line with General Motors tradition, the Supplier of the Year Award will be presented again to the employees of the honored companies at a separate ceremony. For employees of ThyssenKrupp Stahl’s plants in Neuwied, Duisburg, Bochum and Dortmund this ceremony will take place at the Neuwied plant in June.
