German Wire Rod Mill Wraps Up Modernization Project
01/26/2017 - Germany’s Saarstahl AG has signed off on upgrades to its wire rod mill in Burbach, according to the vendor on the project.
According to SMS group, the upgrade comprised the addition of two stands to the mill’s four-stand roughing mill; installation of a shear; and installation of a four-strand switch and a four-strand pinch roll unit.
“With the expansion of the single-strand roughing mill, initial pass sections can now be employed without any reconstruction measures. The final cross-section of the roughing train is equal for all initial pass sections and will now be distributed onto the four strands of the wire rod mill by means of the new switch,” the company said in a statement.
SMS also said the project was completed approximately two months ahead of schedule.
Saarstahl AG is one of the world’s leading producers of steel for rolled and forged finished products. Its Burbach mill has been in operation since 1973, SMS said.
