German Steelmaker Lays Claim to World's Thickest Slab
07/27/2017 - Germany’s Dillinger Hütte said it set a new world record on Tuesday, casting a slab with a thickness of 600 mm, or more than 23.5 inches.
The slab was cast on the plant’s No. 6 vertical continuous caster, which has a metallurgical length of 17.5 m and casting width of 2,200 mm.
The caster’s size allows the plant to make plate in extremely large dimensions and unit weights.
“With the (No. 6 caster) we can process higher volumes of thick plate in shorter times. The benefits for our customers, such as those in the offshore wind power industry or the boiler and pressure vessel sector, include less welding required for larger components, which also results in time savings when processing these types of orders,” said Dillinger chief technical officer Bernd Münnich.
