German Steelmaker Expands Capabilities With Bar Mill Improvements
07/15/2016 - SMS group has won a contract to expand a German special bar quality mill, the equipment maker has announced.
In a statement, SMS said it will be installing a 3-roll precision sizing block and associated components at Lech-Stahlwerke GmbH’s Meitingen plant in Germany. Along with the sizing block, it will supply a roll workshop, a cooling bed, abrasive cut-off machines and a finishing section. It also will provide an electrical and automation package and oversee commissioning.
“The goal of the expansion is to achieve even closer size tolerances of the bars while at the same time increasing the flexibility of the mill. As a result, our reaction to the demands of the market can be faster and in an even more customized manner. We will be able to further boost both yield and quality,” said Knut Rummler, Lech-Stahlwerke’s technical director.
SMS said the project is intended to help Lech-Stahlwerke better meet the needs of its automotive customers and allow for just-in-time delivery of SBQ grades.
With the new sizing block, the company will be able to roll bar with diameters of between 30 and 80 mm in a single-pass family. The finishing section also will enable it to further process rounds and square hollow sections.
