With record numbers of participation of employees, the Gerdau Volunteer Olympics benefited 76,000 people this year in nine countries where the copany operates. The initiative mobilized over 13,000 volunteers who performed safety improvements in about 800 schools, daycare centers, micro and small companies, and other social institutions. Under the slogan "United for Safety: the victory belongs to us all", the initiative involved the operations of Gerdau in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, and Spain. Over 10,300 volunteers were involved in Brazil alone. The action was coordinated by the Gerdau Institute, which is responsible for the Company’s social responsibility policies and guidelines. Gerdau’s volunteer competitions take place every two years and are held in the years of the World Cup and Olympic Games. In 2010, the Gerdau Volunteer Cup was held with the theme of sustainable development during the World Cup in South Africa.
