Gerdau to Make Siderperú one of the Largest Steel Mills in South America

Gerdau has announced it will invest US$ 1.4 billion to increase, by more than 6 times, the production capacity of Siderperú and transform it into one of the largest steel mills in South America. The company made the announcement during a meeting held in the Governor’s Palace with Alan García, the President of Peru.

With the investment, steel production is to increase to 1.5 million tonnes in 2011 and to 3 million tonnes in 2013. The company said the new equipment will include technology to guarantee the most rigorous environmental protection standards.

In the first stage of the investment, Gerdau will commission a technical viability study covering evaluation for the construction and installation of the production equipment, logistic needs, infrastructure, energy and the environment; among others.

The project is anticipated to have a highly positive impact on the town of Chimbote, as it is forecast to generate 2000 new permanent direct jobs and 6000 indirect. During the construction stage, another 4000 positions will be created. According to the company, this process will help to recharge all sectors of the national economy, especially benefitting small and medium companies and development of both the town and the Ancash Region.

“Peru is a strategic country for Gerdau, being a market with great potential and great development possibilities. This project will consolidate the growth of Gerdau in the South American steel producing sector,” stated André Gerdau Johannpeter, CEO.

The Executive Director of Siderperú, Luiz Polacchini, added, “on a national level, Siderperú will be the leader in long and flat steel products, supplying the internal market and exporting, with preference, to the Andean countries”.

Currently, Gerdau is modernizing the Siderperú Steel Mill Complex with an investment of US$ 122 million, a value which already exceeds the commitment made with the Peruvian government at the start of the Siderperú acquisition process in 2006. Of this total, US$ 40 million will be for the implementation of modern air, water and soil protection technologies, which demonstrates commitment in favor of the environment and the community of Chimbote.
