Gerdau To Cut 10% of Its Carbon Emissions by 2031, Go Carbon Neutral in 2050
02/02/2022 - Gerdau plans to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions rate to less than 50% of the global industry average by 2031 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050, according to an official press release.
The Brazilian steelmaker announced this morning that over the next decade, it will lower its average CO2 emissions (CO2e) from 0.93 metric tons CO2e per metric ton steel to 0.83 metric tons CO2e, a reduction of 10%. This value is less than half of the 2020 global steel industry average of 1.89 metric tons CO2e per metric ton of steel as reported by the World Steel Association statistics, Gerdau said.
To achieve this goal, Gerdau will increase its use of recycled scrap metal in steel production, charcoal as a bio-reducer in ironmaking, and renewable electricity generated through solar parks and other projects.
