Gerdau Supplying Long Steel for US$1 Billion Airport Expansion

The project at Tampa International Airport in Florida includes a 2.6 million-square-foot consolidated rental car facility and a 1.4-mile people mover. The main terminal also is being renovated.

Gerdau said it made the first delivery in May and is set to deliver an additional 13,800 tons of rebar. The steelmaker said it also will be delivering 1,700 tons of wide-flange beams. SteelFab, one of the nation's largest suppliers of fabricated structural steel, is providing fabrication services.

The order is being filled by three Gerdau mills in the U.S. -- Jacksonville, Fla., Petersburg, Va., and Midlothian, Texas. Gerdau’s technical resource center in Tampa, Fla., USA, is providing detailing and project management services. The rebar is being fabricated at the company’s reinforcing steel facility located in Plant City, Fla., USA.

“Gerdau’s North American main office is located in Tampa, and it’s very exciting to be part of a major project that supports such a vital part of our own community,” said Paul Morin, the Florida construction director for Gerdau’s North American long steel division.

The project, estimated to cost US$1 billion, is scheduled for completion in late 2017.
