Gerdau Gives Final OK to Furnace Modernization Project
11/11/2022 - Gerdau has issued the final acceptance certificate on an electric arc furnace (EAF) modernization at its Monroe, Mich., USA, special steel plant, reports project contractor Primetals Technologies.
According to Primetals Technologies, the project included installation of transformers, end-to-end process automation and platform robotics such as automatic sand refilling and an automated tap hole manipulator.
Additionally, a new 110-metric-ton twin ladle furnace was installed along with a new material handling system, and related ancillary equipment.
“This upgrade has increased the plant’s overall annual production capacity of special rolled end products. End-to-end automation and the use of LiquiRob robot systems increase productivity and reliability, optimize workflows in the steelworks, and reduce operating costs. The robotic systems also improve worker safety by performing potentially dangerous tasks, such as taking temperatures and samples,” Primetals Technologies said in a statement.
The company was responsible for engineering and supplying the process equipment for the EAF, the 110-metric-ton twin ladle furnace, the material handling system and the structural steel work.
It also supervised the construction and commissioning.
