GE to Upgrade Algoma Steel’s Power Generation Capabilities
01/28/2022 - As part of its transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking, Algoma Steel Group Inc. announced yesterday that it has awarded GE Gas Power a contract to upgrade its natural gas combined cycle power plant.
According to Algoma, GE will provide two LM6000 aero derivative gas turbines, along with new control systems, and a new control system for the existing GE steam turbine. GE will also conduct a full rewind of the No. 2 Generator.
“Our transformation to [electric arc furnace] steelmaking and green steel products includes the upgrade of our internal electricity generation capacity, and we are pleased to partner with industry leader General Electric to complete this important milestone,” Michael McQuade, Algoma’s chief executive officer, said in a press release. “The project also reflects Algoma’s continued commitment to our community by engaging local contractors to support the installation.”
The project is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2023, a full year before commissioning of the new electric arc furnaces. The cogeneration facility is designed to generate 110 MW of electricity at full capacity.
