Fully Staffed Plants a Matter of Safety, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Says
05/04/2023 - Since acquiring AK Steel, ArcelorMittal’s legacy U.S. mills, and scrap recycler Ferrous Processing and Trading, Cleveland-Cliffs has expanded its headcount by more than one-third, chief executive Lourenco Goncalves said during a union event, reports The Times newspaper of northwest Indiana.
“By and large, all the assets we acquired were all understaffed. They promoted practices like forcing people to work long hours. Having people step up to work 12-hour, 14-hour or 16-hour shifts is a recipe for disaster,” Goncalves told the United Steelworkers union during an event remembering workers who have died on duty, according to the newspaper.
“We don’t do 16-hour shifts as more than 12 hours is more than a normal human being can work. That’s why we’re hiring. If we can’t afford to have the plant fully staffed, we can’t afford the plant. It’s for our common protection.”
