Friedrich Kocks to Supply Hyundai Steel with 3-Roll RSB Technology

Hyundai Steel Co. has decided to build a new combined wire rod and bar mill in the city of Dangjin in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. For this new mill, Hyundai selected Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co. KG in Hilden, Germany, to supply a reducing and sizing block (RSB) as the finishing mill for the bar line. The production of this mill will mainly be directed to supplying special bar quality (SBQ) in engineered steel grades to Hyundai Motor Co., which is currently the fourth largest automaker in the world.

The 5-stand heavy-duty block RSB AUL, with a nominal roll diameter of 370 mm, features the well-proven 3-roll design and is equipped with a closed loop size control system (SCS) and a high-speed remote control of passes and guides of the 3-roll stands in the mill line, which allows the implementation of stands adjustable under load (AUL).

After completion of the new 800,000 metric ton per annum combined wire rod and bar mill, the RSB will be able to roll straight and coiled bar in SBQ-quality in all sizes within the dimensional range from 16- to 100-mm diameter.

The RSB is prepared for temperature controlled rolling at low temperatures and allows rolling of any finished size out of only one pass series in the 18-stand, 2-high roughing and intermediate mill. BAMICON, the rolling configuration program that is supplied with the RSB, calculates optimum adjusting values for motor speed, rolls and guides as well as gear stages depending on the requested finished product.

The scope of supply also includes a quick automatic stand changing system, a stand and roll workshop with quick roll change, the computer-aided CAPAS system for precise adjustment of rolls and guides in the stand, and the high speed remote control of passes and guides of the 3-roll stands in the mill line. The total package is completed by supervision of assembly, commissioning and training of the customer’s personnel.

The start-up of Hyundai’s new combined wire rod and bar mill is scheduled for the second half of 2015. The 3-roll RSB-technology will allow the company to achieve reliable and consistent SBQ production of premium quality with perfect surface and closest tolerances.
