Friedrich Kocks to Supply 3-Roll RSB for Medium Section Mill in China

Daye Special Steel Co. Ltd. (Daye), a company belonging to the Chinese CITIC Pacific Steel Group, will install a medium section mill in Huangshi, in the southeast of Hubei province, approximately 150 km southwest of Wuhan. The order for the finishing mill, a 3-roll reducing & sizing block (RSB), was placed with Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co. KG based in Hilden, Germany. The decision in favor of this machinery was highly influenced by the excellent performance and the trouble-free operation of the RSB in Daye’s existing specialty bar mill.

Daye’s predecessor, Daye Iron & Steel, was one of the oldest steel companies in China and known as China’s steel cradle. Nowadays Daye is one of the largest special steel producers in this country. The products are widely recognized and accepted by both domestic and international companies and are used in nearly all fields of application.

The heavy duty RSB is equipped with four stand positions and is designed for controlled rolling at low temperatures. With a nominal roll diameter of 500 mm this is so far the biggest 3-roll RSB. It will be operated as finishing block in the 900,000-metric-tons-per-annum medium section mill downstream the 16-stand 2-high roughing and intermediate mill. The RSB rolls round bar in special bar qualities within the range of 50.0 mm Ø to 130.0 mm Ø in straight lengths onto the cooling bed.

The RSB allows rolling out of only one pass series from the roughing and intermediate mill and thus significantly reduces the number of required feeders down to only five. The RSB can produce any desired finished dimension of the complete dimensional range in any desired sequence with a minimum number of roll sets and just a few stand changes.

The scope of supply comprises the 3-roll RSB with automatic quick stand changing system, the roll shop with quick roll change, the mill configuration program BAMICON, the inline remotely controlled pass and guide adjustment and CAPAS, the computer-aided system for accurate adjustment of rolls and guides of the 3-roll stands in the roll shop. Supervision of erection, commissioning and training of customer personnel are as usual also KOCKS responsibility.

The start-up of the new medium section mill incorporating the 3-roll RSB will enable Daye to meet the set target of becoming the most competitive future-oriented special steel company in its market.
