Four Herr-Voss Stamco Employees Celebrate 40+ Years of Service
03/06/2014 - Herr-Voss Stamco is celebrating four of its employees having 40+ years of service.
Sherry Davidson joined the company as an administrative assistant in the capital sales department. “I’ve seen a lot of technology in the office change over the years,” said Davidson. Sherry has seen the migration from using a telex machine, to a fax machine, to email; from a typewriter and using carbon paper to DOS based software to Windows. Sherry currently is the field service administrator handling the scheduling and logistics for all of Herr-Voss Stamco’s field service technicians.
Audie Dunbar joined the company working in the engineering department. “I took a liking to the precision leveler as it fascinated me with its flattening capabilities,” said Dunbar. “Herr-Voss standardized the precision leveler (now our VKL series) to make the machine more affordable to steel service centers and manufacturers in the mid 70’s. We expanded the development of our VML series mini-leveler in the early 80’s to make the leveler more versatile for smaller manufacturers such as roll former users and stamping houses.”
Audie then joined the capital sales department as the product manager of precision levelers. “The applications and uses for the machine continued to grow and grow. My time in capital sales afforded me the opportunity to see a large part of the world that I would not have had the opportunity to see.” Audie’s current role is supporting mills as manager of customer service in the company’s mill service solutions group.
Jay Shemela started at our Valley Rolls facility as a journal grinder making US$3.25 an hour. Jay remembers he joined five other employees working in the Valley Rolls plant. “We would all be working on the same order,” said Shemela. “Throughout my 40 year span, I’ve worked several different jobs from mill operator to finish grinder. That has allowed me to be pretty diverse in my job today and wear many different hats. Over the years Herr-Voss Stamco has invested and upgraded our grinders and lathes and we currently boast a state-of-the-art induction heat treater. That type of commitment from the company and the work ethics of my fellow coworkers have contributed to me being here 40 years,” Jay added.
Lloyd Zahn has been heavily involved with design and application engineering during his years at Herr-Voss Stamco. “I was lucky to be associated with talented and influential coworkers and managers who were educators and mentors with dedicated resolve toward machine design performance and reliability”, says Lloyd. “This dedication to design innovation created the necessary environment that nurtured my creative focus. Direct involvement with product end users has also been a valuable opportunity for design evolution,” added Zahn.
In the 1970’s, Herr-Voss’s engineers used tools like drafting boards to get the job done. “The way we did things was different, but the end result has remained the same; providing the best of the best equipment design. The consolidation of Herr Equipment and Voss Engineering in 1970 can be traced to the development and growth of our current engineering managers; they’ve become mentors and instructors who will continue to guide Herr-Voss Stamco equipment design forward,” said Zahn. Lloyd is currently the chief design engineer for the company’s mill service solutions group.
The careers of these four employees are not uncommon at Herr-Voss Stamco. The company boasts an impressive list of long-term employees with 28 employees having 30+ years of service.
“The strength of a company is determined by its employees,” said Craig Burkhart, vice president of administration. “The knowledge and experience base that exists at Herr-Voss Stamco is the driving force behind our continuing ability to provide customers with the best solutions based on the best technologies.”
