For President Trump, Decision on Steel Tariffs Looms
01/11/2018 - Within the next four days, the U.S. Department of Commerce is to send to the president its much anticipated report on whether imported steel poses a threat to national security.
In all likelihood, the report will argue that imports indeed threaten national security. But what remains to be seen is how President Donald Trump responds. And no matter what he does, his decision likely will bring about undesired outcomes, argues The Economist in a recent essay.
“The costs of severe trade restrictions would indeed be great,” The Economist writes. “Narrower restrictions would hurt less, but raise the chances of imports leaking into America anyway."
