Fluor to Provide Maintenance Excellence Program for Stelco

Fluor Corp.’s Canadian subsidiary has been awarded a contract from Stelco Inc. to provide asset productivity and maintenance improvement consulting services as part of Stelco’s strategy to strengthen its competitive position.

Fluor, through its offices in Calgary and Greenville, S.C., will perform consulting and training services at Stelco’s Hamilton and Nanticoke, Ont., Canada, facilities. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Working in conjunction with Stelco’s executive management and operations teams, Fluor guided development of the Stelco Maintenance Excellence Project (SMEP) in 2004 by utilizing its BestPlantSM assessment and benchmarking process to quantify the value of Stelco’s maintenance, work process, and non-capital capacity improvements. Stelco is now in the early phases of implementing the improvements identified in 2004.

“Stelco has worked intensively with Fluor for almost one year,” said Colin Osborne, Stelco’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Through that process we have identified significant opportunity to improve Stelco’s bottom line, and have now engaged in an extensive Maintenance Excellence program, which will be a cornerstone in Stelco’s improving competitiveness. This program is part of the company’s strategic plan, which we announced a year ago. This step-change improvement program will help drive top-quartile reliability and maintenance cost performance.”
