Fives Receives the Nod for Walking Beam Furnace Build
11/27/2023 - India’s Vardhman Special Steels has ordered a billet reheating furnace from Fives, the equipment supplier has said.
According to Fives, the furnace will process special steel billets that feed a bar mill at the company’s Ludhiana plant in the state of Punjab. The walking beam furnace has a capacity of 45 metric tons per hour and will increase overall plant capacity to 300,000 metric tons annually, Fives said.
Fives said the furnace will feature an advanced combustion system that provides high environmental performance, ultralow NOx emissions, uniform heat distribution and operational flexibility.
The furnace is intended to solve plant issues related to poor billet heating, scale loss and high emissions from its existing reheating furnace. It also will allow for production of automotive-quality bar products.
“Our goal was to supply special steel bars, which are currently being imported, to Indian carmakers to manufacture crankshafts and camshafts locally. We wanted an advanced technology as special steel grade heating requires specific expertise,” said Vardhman Special Steels vice chairman and managing director Sachit Jain.
The furnace is to enter service in April 2025.
