Fire Damages New York Bar Finishing Plant
09/15/2017 - U.S.-based Universal Stainless & Alloy Products Inc. is investigating the cause of a fire that damaged the pickling operation at its Dunkirk, N.Y., bar and rod finishing plant.
In a statement, the company said no one was injured, but the fire caused upwards of US$450,000 in damage. The company said repairs are underway, and it does not expect shipments to be significantly impaired.
"We are grateful that no one was injured during the fire and our sincere thanks go out to the City of Dunkirk firefighters, the West Dunkirk Fire Department and the Chautauqua County (hazardous materials team) for their quick response and their efforts to extinguish the fire in short order and prevent any releases or spills. We have some work in front of us to get the pickling operation back to full operation; however, we are determined to do what is necessary to maintain the delivery status of our customer orders," chairman and chief executive Dennis Oates said.
