February Steel Shipments Down 6.5% from Last Year

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,350,000 net tons in February 2007, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The February total represents a 6.5% decrease from the 8,937,000 net tons shipped in February 2006, and a 3.2% decrease from the 8,614,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, January 2007. 
 
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
 
  • Service centers and distributors, -9.7%
  • Automotive, -4.6%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, +2.2%
  • Oil and gas, -8.1%
  • Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, -10.1%
  • Appliances, utensils and cutlery, -6.6%
  • Containers, packaging and shipping materials, -7.4%
  • Electrical equipment, -16.2 %
