February Steel Shipments Down 1.1% from January

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,407,343 net tons for the month of February 2012, according to the latest release from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The February total represents a 1.1% decrease from the 8,497,932 net tons shipped in the previous month, January 2012, and a 20.7% increase from the 6,967,481 net tons shipped last year, in February 2011.
 
Year-to-date shipments for 2012 are 16,905,275 net tons, a 16.6% increase vs. 2011 shipments of 14,496,136 net tons for the first two months. 2012 shipments through February would annualize at 101 million tons.
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
·         Hot-dip galvanized sheets and strip, up 7%
·         Cold rolled sheet, down 4%
·         Hot rolled sheet, down 6%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 124 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
