Fatalities at ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Newcastle Works
01/04/2010 - Four employees of ArcelorMittal South Africa lost their lives following an accident at its Newcastle plant in KwaZulu Natal on December 30. A fifth employee was hospitalized in stable condition. The employees were working on Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 3 when they collapsed as a result of a suspected gas leak.
Four employees of ArcelorMittal South Africa lost their lives following an accident at its Newcastle plant in KwaZulu Natal on December 30. A fifth employee was hospitalized but was in stable condition.
The employees were working on Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 3 when they collapsed, seemingly as a result of a suspected gas leak, according to the company. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
ArcelorMittal South Africa has extended its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. The names of the employees were to be released once the next of kin were informed.
Despite this accident, ArcelorMittal says that it remains determined to achieve zero fatalities at its operations.
Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 3 has been down for the past two months due to relining; production has not been affected.
