Evraz to Implement Coal Injection at its Russian Blast Furnaces

Evraz Group has begun to implement Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) technology in the production of pig iron at its Russian steel mills Zapsib and NTMK.

Under the project, the company will build pulverized coal preparation complexes that will be equipped with modern treatment and dust aspiration facilities. The company is also carrying out preparatory works for future construction at its other blast furnace shops.

Pulverized coal injection will allow Evraz to use steam coal as fuel for its Russian blast furnaces so that it can discontinue the use of natural gas in its blast furnaces by the end of 2012. The upgrade will help the company save up to 650 million cubic meters of natural gas per year at NTMK and up to 600 million cubic meters per year at Zapsib while reducing total coke consumption by more than 20%. It will also reduce the company’s environmental impact.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be approximately US$300 million.
