EVRAZ North America Orders Heat Treatment System from SMS Elotherm
07/18/2013 - EVRAZ North America has ordered an Elotherm TemperLine™ heat treatment system for its tubular products plant in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. With this unit, EVRAZ is increasing its capacity for heat-treated pipe by over 150%.
This Elotherm TemperLine™ will be designed for the heat treatment of up to 30 tons of OCTG (oil country tubular goods) per hour. Due to the high flexibility of Elotherm’s heating systems, with very short downtimes for changing the pipe size or final grade, this 12-MW TemperLine™ will be capable of heat treating more than 200,000 tons of pipes per year.
“The Calgary expansions will allow us to offer a more comprehensive product portfolio to meet growing needs for premium OCTG products,” says Tigran Atayan, Executive vice president – Tubular Products Group of EVRAZ North America. “This project, as well as the expansion of the premium threading line already underway at our Red Deer facility, demonstrates our strong commitment to customers in Western Canada.”
“In order to obtain the best metallurgical, mechanical and geometrical results on the processed pipes, the hardening unit is subdivided into seven different zones, each fully independently powered and controlled,” says Dr. Guido Opezzo from Elotherm in Germany.
“This renders it possible to finely adjust the power input into the pipes and use the final zones as standard final heating zones for ERW pipes or as soaking zones, when processing seamless pipes and premium grades,” says Opezzo.
EVRAZ tubular facilities manufacture a wide range of OCTG. In addition to carbon and alloyed products, the range includes premium tube connections as well as small and large-diameter line pipe, all of which meet or exceed standards set by the American Petroleum Institute (API).
The induction heating unit is scheduled to go into operation in the fourth quarter of 2014.
The 12-MW Temperline will be able to heat-treat more than 200,000 tons of pipe annually.
