EUROPIPE Bags 890,000-Ton Order For Undersea Pipeline
03/11/2016 - German joint venture EUROPIPE is being awarded to contract to supply nearly 1 million tons of large-diameter pipe for a natural gas pipeline running under the Baltic Sea.
In a statement, EUROPIPE partners Salzgitter Group and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke said the order is for 890,000 metric tons, the equivalent of 1,100 kilometers. The order is to be filled in lots produced between August and mid-2018, they said.
The order is bound for the second phase of the Nord Stream project, a pipeline that connects Russia’s gas fields to Germany and the European markets. Gazprom is the majority shareholder in the pipeline.
According to the EUROPIPE partners, the project is one of the largest and most complex offshore gas pipelines ever constructed.
Two threads of the pipeline already have been built and are transporting gas. Thread Nos. 3 and 4, for which EUROPIPE’s pipe is bound, have yet to be built.
EUROPIPE made nearly 1.6 million metric tons of pipe for Nord Stream’s first two threads. The contract for the latest order is to be signed in the next few weeks, EUROPIPE's partners said.
