European Steel Producers, Workers Push for Government Support
06/14/2023 - Approximately 12,000 steelworkers rallied at thyssenkrupp Steel headquarters in Duisburg, Germany, Wednesday, demanding that the German government commit to funding the industry's effort to abate CO2 emissions, reports the Reuters news service.
According to Reuters, thyssenkrupp's deputy supervisory board chairman Jürgen Kerner, a labor leader, said the company needed clarity on funding within weeks, without which the company might rescind recent decarbonization investment decisions.
Meanwhile, in the U.K., Tata Steel UK chairman Henrik Adam is calling on the country's government to support a "level playing field" as his competitors receive financial support for their decarbonization projects.
"The only thing we are really asking for is a level playing field across our peers in Europe," Adam told the BBC.
