EU to Re-Examine Protection Measure Against Steel Imports
02/14/2020 - The European Commission is undertaking another review of its safeguard measure against steel imports.
In a notice published in the Official Journal of the European Union, the commission said it is undertaking a second review – the first was completed last fall – to “take account of possible developments and changed circumstances before the end of the second year of measures.”
The commission said it will re-examine the measure’s tariff-rate quota system as well as the list of developing WTO member countries that are currently excluded from the list.
The review is to conclude by the end of June.
The European Steel Association said the review was welcomed.
"We believe that further refinements could improve upon the existing system and make it more robust and responsive to the actual state of the EU steel market," the association said in a statement to commodities news and pricing service S&P Global Platts.
