Essar Steel Minnesota Mineral Leases in Jeopardy
07/06/2016 - Essar Steel Minnesota has missed a deadline to reimburse the state of Minnesota US$66 million in incentives related to its stalled taconite mining project and now could lose its public mineral leases, reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
According to the Star Tribune, the company had until 1 July -- when the leases expired -- to make the reimbursement, but didn’t. As a result, the state might decide against extending them.
“Gov. (Mark) Dayton is engaged in negotiations and discussions and trading offers back and forth with Essar,” Minnesota state Rep. Tom Anzelc, chairman of the legislature’s Iron Range delegation, told the newspaper.
“At issue, primarily, is Essar’s request for an extension of the mineral leases. That seems to be what they want more than anything else in the short term.”
